The USA won the cold war by pushing the soviets as far as they could go. Ronald Reagan, the 40th president of the United States, saw the USSR as an evil empire and wouldn’t by any means negotiate with them. He implemented theStrategic Defence Initiative (star wars) to prevent missile attacks from other countries but especially from the USSR. Ronald Reagan made it known to the Soviets that the US were investing in a massive defense network called Star Wars. Star Wars was to offer an immense amount of protection from any missile attack. The Soviets therefor thought that they had an advantage knowing the US’s “secret.” However the Soviets could not come up with a solution, they kept spending more and more money trying to come up with an answer but were unsuccessful and eventually their economy sank. This put the US way ahead of the soviets. This program was successful in driving them away. The soviets could no longer keep up to this kind of science. This was successful because it hit the Soviets in exactly the right place. The US knew that they were not as wealthy them and therefore found their weak spots. The soviets lost the Cold war from not having as strong an economy in comparison to the US at that time.
The term Detente refers to the relaxation of tensions. When nuclear war was a prominent horror surrounding the globe during the cold war Detente was installed. Between the late 1960's and 1970's, there was a thawing of the long tensions between the states and Russia. Detente included four event: Nuclear non-Proliferation Treat, Ostopolitik, Helsinki accords and the Salt Talks. The most successful act of detente out of these four events were the salt talks. Throughout the 1960's and 70's, the fabrication of nuclear weapons and tensions were growing rapidly. The purpose of the salt talks were to halt the creation of nuclear weapons by other countries. The treaty stated that if a country didn't already have nuclear weapons, they weren't allowed to start making them. Hence, France and China were both close to having installed their nuclear weapons and refused to sign the treaty. Although the non-proliferation treaty did indeed lessen tensions between countries the other detente events all had there key roles in the lessening tensions in the Cold War.
The USA lost the Vietnam war in several ways. First of all, they lost millions of dollars and thousands of lives from the brutal fighting that occurred on the battlefield. The Vietnam War costed America 150 billion dollars. American opposition was a large factor in the Vietnam War. Since it was the first war that had media coverage, Americans surrounding the country were able to observe the morally wrong brutalities that were occurring across the globe. Another reason for which the Americans lost the Vietnam War was due to the failure of communist containment. Originally, Us soldiers fled to stop the spread of communism to the South of the country. Unfortunately, they failed to do so, as South Vietnam fell into a communist state. Hence, this is where the domino theory took place. The domino theory describes the falling of other countries into communist leadership. The US lost the Vietnam war, as they not only lost their battle of helping South Vietnam to democracy, they also lost the respect of their country in several aspects.
