Summary
Operation Husky was the key Allied advance. Right after the allies defeated the Germans in North Africa, the Germans immediately retreated to Italy. From there the Allies followed and launched operation Husky. From July 9, 1943 onward the Allies slowly defeated the Germans and liberated Italy. At this point Mussolini had already been run out of town and Italy wanted to become part of the allied nation. When Mussolini was found he was hung with his mistress by the neck until dead and then left hanging by his toes.
