In the Great Leap Forward an astounding 30 000 people died. An astonishing number. The Great Leap Forward was Mao's attempt to modernize China's economy. His aim was to out due the american economy. Unlike other mass casualties such as Htlers Holocaust, The Great Leap Forward had nothing to do with eliminating a certain race, and nothing to do with the war. In essence, Mao got caught up in his 5 year plan that he didn't realize the amount of people he was killing and the damage that he was doing to the country and his people. Hence, most of the deaths in the Great Leap Forward resulted from the great famine. Mao's actions were trying to reflect on his leadership, where he didn't realize the damage that he was committing, while Hitler and Stalin murdered thousands knowingly and willingly.
In a way, the Japanese were responsible for bringing communism to China. When Chiannd Kai-Sheck became ruler, Mao Zedong was the propaganda leader. Zedong was a strong believe in communism and promoting it worldwide. His head was set on building the communist party. In 1931, Japan invaded Manchuria to get rid of the CCP, but it resulted in the CCP increasing their strength. During the Chinese Civil War, Mao and the CCP were able to free parts of Northern China from the Japanese. During this time, Chiang was too focused on Manchuria, and preventing communism slipped his mind.Chiang ended up losing, and Mao took over, creating the Peoples Republic of China. If Chiang weren't so focused on Manchuria, he could've perhaps contained communism. In essence, this is why Japan had to some extent responsibility for the communism in China.
